Consumer protection advocates have unveiled a “Student AI Bill of Rights” asking colleges and universities to commit to principles for transparency, human oversight, data sovereignty, safe AI use, and student participation in AI benefits. The National Student Legal Defense Network launched the framework as part of its Safeguarding Higher-Ed through AI Practices & Ethics (SHAPE AI) initiative. The proposed rights are tailored to higher education use cases that range from recruitment and admissions to classroom instruction and wraparound student support. The bill’s advisory committee includes institutional leaders, policy experts, and consumer advocates. At the center is the demand for notice—students should know when and how AI systems evaluate or track them—and a right to appeal for high-stakes decisions affecting admissions, academic standing, or financial stability. Advocates also stress that enrollment should not be treated as consent for commercialization of students’ personal data and intellectual output. The initiative sets a policy reference point that institutions may need to consider as they expand AI tools faster than institutional governance and compliance processes can evolve.
