The American Association of University Professors is investigating alleged academic freedom and shared governance violations across Texas public colleges and universities, citing rapidly increasing political interference. AAUP national president Todd Wolfson said the probe would examine implementation of Texas Senate Bill 37 and related actions that shift control over faculty councils and senates. SB 37 limits the creation of faculty councils to governing-board authorization and gives presidents power to appoint top officers and select half the membership. AAUP says the changes have accelerated over the past nine months and are contributing to “extreme distress” among faculty, staff, and students. AAUP investigations can result in public censure of administrations and amplify scrutiny of how state laws constrain curriculum, teaching, and campus speech—particularly as political oversight expands into faculty governance structures.
