Education unions criticized Massachusetts’ pilots for three-year bachelor’s degrees, arguing the programs prioritize speed over academic integrity and deeper learning. The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) issued a joint statement opposing the Suffolk University and Merrimack College plans. They argued a bachelor’s degree should provide sustained engagement with faculty and peers, not a shortened route intended to reach the labor market faster. The unions also pointed to policy alternatives—expanding Pell Grants and TRIO—while warning that compressed pathways could weaken critical thinking and communication outcomes. Accreditation and outcome reviews are scheduled after pilots begin.
