The U.S. Department of Justice extended a key deadline for web accessibility compliance for public colleges and other covered entities under the ADA. The interim final rule pushes the deadline for institutions in counties or cities with populations of 50,000 or more from April 24, 2026 to April 26, 2027, with smaller entities getting until April 26, 2028. The DOJ cited implementation burden and concerns raised by education groups, including higher-education organizations, which said compliance requires significant resources, staffing time, and coordination across complex digital ecosystems. Disability advocates and IT leaders have warned that many schools remain in progress on digital standards like WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Institutions now have additional runway to remediate websites, mobile apps, social media content, and instructional materials, but the extension still shifts attention to how campuses document compliance and manage vendors, learning platforms, and content lifecycle processes.
