Anna Maria College announced it will close at the end of the spring semester and shut down by the end of 2026, citing insurmountable financial challenges. The Massachusetts Catholic institution said the decision followed months of review by the Board of Trustees and leadership, plus warnings from both its accreditor and the state. The New England Commission of Higher Education warned in March that Anna Maria risked violating standards on institutional resources and financial stability. Massachusetts Department of Higher Education also warned of closure risk on April 10. The school cited years of financial pressure amid falling enrollment and limited liquidity, with federal data showing enrollment of 1,202 in fall 2024. Anna Maria’s endowment was valued at about $1.5 million at the end of fiscal year 2025, and its audit indicated a bond-covenant violation in FY25 that received a waiver from bondholders. Officials said the institution will halt academic offerings after spring and then complete closure by end of 2026.
