The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) advanced a governance integrity agenda aimed at restoring public trust and improving board effectiveness. In its CEO update, AGB described a national Higher Education Governance Integrity Initiative built around five state-level policy recommendations, including trustee selection reforms, modernizing trustee education, and fiduciary certification. AGB also renewed focus on governance’s role in accreditation reform, arguing that the proposed Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization (AIM) regulations raise difficult questions about how states and accreditors should oversee board responsibilities. For institutions, the update signals continued board-level scrutiny of governance practices and a push for clearer expectations ahead of regulatory and accreditation implementation, where board actions may become a focal compliance area.
