The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) elected eight new members to its Board of Directors for terms beginning July 1, 2026, and announced new board officers. The board includes senior academic and executive leaders from a range of institutions, including University of the Virgin Islands, Oklahoma State Regents, Baruch College (CUNY), University of South Carolina Upstate, Saint Louis University, University of San Diego, Lone Star College–Online, and California State University San Marcos. CHEA also named Athens State University President Catherine Wehlburg as chair, Webster University Provost David Schmidt as vice chair, and Lori Williams as secretary. Colette Pierce Burnette was named treasurer, with F. Javier Cevallos continuing as immediate past chair. The leadership updates matter for institutions watching CHEA’s positioning on quality assurance, public trust, and accreditation policy as higher education adapts to AI-enabled risk and evolving student success expectations.
