A federal judge extended deadlines for colleges and higher-ed associations to submit race- and sex-disaggregated admissions data to the U.S. Department of Education. The ruling gives institutional members of six higher education associations, plus six private nonprofit colleges, until April 24 to file the required information. U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor also allowed the groups and colleges to join a legal challenge to the Education Department’s new survey. The survey was originally due in March and was announced in August; the Department has said the data is intended to assess compliance with the 2023 Supreme Court decision that struck down race-conscious admissions practices. Earlier, Saylor had temporarily blocked enforcement against public colleges in 17 states, finding the Department likely violated the Administrative Procedure Act. This latest deadline extension applies to the groups and colleges continuing the challenge.
