A federal judge granted additional colleges an extra delay to submit newly required admissions data disaggregated by race and sex to the U.S. Department of Education. The latest extension covers members of the Association of American Universities and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts, pushing the deadline to April 14 for those institutions. The delay continues a broader legal challenge by 17 Democratic attorneys general seeking to block the data collection. In related litigation, U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor previously paused the timeline for public colleges in those states, extending their deadline to April 6 while the court considers whether to issue a preliminary injunction. Saylor said he had not yet decided whether the two associations can join the case or whether a preliminary injunction should be granted. A hearing is scheduled for April 13 as the Department continues to argue the data is needed to assess compliance with the 2023 Supreme Court ruling on race-conscious admissions.
