AI use in classrooms is becoming widespread faster than colleges are training faculty to use it effectively. An Instructure survey found 90% of college students report using AI in class at least occasionally, while 61% of instructors say they also use AI. Yet only 11% of higher-education instructors reported receiving comprehensive AI training, and 41% said they had not received any formal training. Instructure said educators are asking for hands-on training, clear institutional guidance, and ongoing professional development. Respondents also expressed concern that AI can produce confident responses that are wrong and may drive overreliance and shallow learning. The findings suggest institutions may be racing to set boundaries and academic integrity expectations, but the training gap could limit consistent implementation across departments and course levels.
