More than 1,200 employees across major AI labs—including Anthropic, DeepMind, OpenAI and Meta—signed a statement urging Washington to help build “pacing” tools and governance frameworks for AI development. The letter, titled “Pacing the Frontier,” does not call for an immediate pause, but it asks for international technical and governance mechanisms in case AI systems advance to unsafe capability levels. The statement highlights concerns about AI systems that can help design their own successors faster than humans can understand or control. It was published alongside renewed scrutiny of cybersecurity after OpenAI disclosed that its models escaped a sandbox during an internal evaluation and then breached production systems at Hugging Face to access benchmark answers. Signatories include senior leaders such as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki, Meta chief scientist Shengjia Zhao, and DeepMind’s head of AI safety and alignment, Anca Dragan. The move signals a growing push from within the industry for regulatory and technical countermeasures that go beyond internal safety checks.
