A 2026 survey of campus chief technology and information officers found technology change is accelerating beyond what many colleges can sustain without additional resources. Nearly half of CTOs (49%) said the pace is unsustainable without new funding, while nearly all expect IT costs to rise over the next two years. The survey also highlights persistent risk concerns even as institutions rely more on AI. CTOs cited the highest perceived risks as the difficulty of recruiting and retaining IT talent (62%), cybersecurity threats (59%), and an unsustainable cost trajectory (56%). Many respondents expressed concerns about AI’s value, academic integrity, and cybersecurity. The findings also indicate experimentation beyond traditional learning management systems, as some institutions explore alternatives to current LMS platforms. The results were supported by T-Mobile for Education, Jenzabar, and Modo and were slated for discussion in an Inside Higher Ed webcast. Overall, the survey frames AI deployment in higher education as a governance and resourcing challenge—not just a tool adoption decision.
