Generative AI is now effectively standard practice across higher education: a Coursera/Coursera‑sourced report finds nearly universal use by students and faculty and strong student demand for formal AI instruction. Yet only about a quarter of educators report that their institutions have formal policies governing AI use, leaving gaps in academic integrity, privacy, and pedagogy. Some institutions are moving faster than others: Dartmouth has appointed a faculty special advisor on AI and formed recommendations for adoption, while other campuses scramble to build governance, training, and assessment practices. ‘‘Generative AI’’ here refers to models that produce text, images, or code from prompts; campuses must now translate widespread informal use into policy, pedagogy and compliance frameworks.
