Parents are pushing for more disciplined technology use in K-12 classrooms, and educators are adjusting accordingly. A National Parents Union survey found three-quarters of parents want daily screen-time limits, while just 1% want no screen time in school, signaling a preference for governance rather than elimination. The survey also reflects sharper concern about social media and AI than about devices in general, with respondents saying federal policy does not do enough to protect kids from social media and AI. Those attitudes are now surfacing in district and state actions, including Los Angeles Unified’s resolution to cap screen time and eliminate digital devices for preschool through first grade starting in fall 2026. At the policy level, lawmakers in nearly 20 states have introduced technology restrictions, including efforts to increase parental control and limit AI use—shifting districts to justify ed-tech purchases with clearer learning and protection standards.
