New survey data shows generative AI is prompting students to reconsider academic and career pathways. Gallup and the Lumina Foundation found that 47% of students have thought about switching majors or fields of study “a great deal” or “a fair amount” because of AI-driven job market concerns, and 16% have actually changed majors in response. The pressure is uneven: students in associate degree programs and men reported higher levels of AI-related major reconsideration, and technology and vocational-track students were among the most likely to report change thinking. Students in health care and natural sciences were least likely to cite AI as a reason. The results land as colleges expand AI literacy and compliance efforts. They also increase demand for career services to address uncertainty about AI’s impact on entry-level roles and to align program outcomes with rapidly evolving workforce expectations.
