New survey data shows large shares of college students are actively rethinking majors due to AI-related job concerns. Gallup and the Lumina Foundation surveyed 3,801 students and found that 47% have considered switching majors—either a great deal or a fair amount—amid generative AI’s rise. The report highlights sharp differences by gender, major, and institution type. Male students (60%) were more likely than female students (38%) to contemplate a change, and associate-degree students reported higher concern than bachelor’s seekers. Technology students were most likely to consider switching (70%), while students in health care and natural sciences reported lower levels (34%). For 16% of students, the concerns have already led to an actual major change, with the highest shares among men (21%) and associate-degree students (19%), signaling that AI anxiety may be driving real student pathway decisions.
