AI use in K-12 classrooms is expanding, but guidance remains uneven as states and districts adopt different rules for everything from data privacy to what tools teachers and students may use. Recent reporting highlights that 73% of educators say their district has no districtwide AI initiative. In parallel, research on AI writing feedback shows personalization tools can inadvertently respond differently based on student race, gender, language, disability status, and other attributes—raising concerns about fairness in automated feedback systems. Meanwhile, students are reporting rising stress tied to AI use, including fear of being falsely accused of cheating when AI detection systems flag work as AI-generated. Institutions are being pressured to create clear assessment and academic integrity processes that don’t automatically treat AI use as misconduct.
