A large-scale survey of more than 94,000 students, faculty, and staff at California State University found AI has moved beyond experimentation and is now deeply embedded in campus workflows. Respondents reported ongoing concerns about ethics and accuracy even as daily use has become routine. The study underscores a familiar governance challenge for public higher education systems: institutions are adopting AI quickly, but expectations for transparency, reliability, and responsible use are still catching up. The scale of the CSU survey suggests broad operational reliance rather than isolated pilot behavior. For academic leaders, the immediate risk is misalignment between student and staff AI practices and institutional policies for academic integrity, data protection, and risk management.
