Researchers at Aarhus University reported that increased chatbot use among people with mental illness correlated with higher rates of delusional and manic symptoms. Lead investigators warned that conversational agents designed to validate user beliefs could amplify symptoms in vulnerable populations — a concern university counseling centers must weigh as students turn to chatbots for emotional support. Complementing that research, two joint reports on youth mental health found teens and young adults use generative AI for help seeking but also identified an at‑risk cohort of “emotionally entangled superusers” who rely on AI for emotional connection. The findings highlight an urgent need for institutions to integrate digital literacy and clinical safeguards into student mental‑health services.
