Leon Botstein announced his retirement as president of Bard College following an independent review that found he “minimized” or was not fully accurate about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Bard trustees commissioned outside law firm WilmerHale to review communications between Botstein and Epstein after newly surfaced documentation expanded scrutiny. The review concluded Botstein did not do anything illegal, but it said his decisions during the relationship reflected on his leadership. Documents released by the U.S. Justice Department previously showed Epstein met with Botstein multiple times and sometimes arrived at Bard via helicopter, including a request that Epstein be a guest at 2013 graduation ceremonies. Botstein said he would remain on Bard’s faculty as a teacher and musician and delayed public retirement until the completion of the review. The case underscores how governance due diligence and reputational risk assessments are reshaping leadership continuity at smaller institutions.
