Reed College agreed to expand campus antisemitism protections to settle a federal civil-rights complaint filed on behalf of two Jewish students who left the college after reporting antisemitic attacks. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights complaint and settlement terms described in the report, students alleged that other students tore down and smashed a mezuzah from a dorm room door and later hit one complainant with a rock thrown through her window. The settlement reached through OCR-guided mediation does not include an admission of liability. Reed College agreed to implement mandatory campuswide antisemitism training developed with partners including the Anti-Defamation League and the Louis D. Brandeis Center, adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism for intent assessment, and clarify prohibited harassment or discrimination connected to Jewish and Israeli identity. Reed also agreed to appoint a Title VI coordinator and retain an independent consultant to evaluate its response to antisemitism complaints over a multi-year period, alongside annual public statements denouncing antisemitism for the next two years.
