The incident follows earlier reporting that more than 30 Minnesota water systems were targeted, after a federal cyber alert warned of Iranian hackers focusing on water and wastewater operations and other critical infrastructure. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI reiterated that the threat remains active. For higher education institutions—especially those with complex campus facilities (water, wastewater, energy management, and labs)—the updates underline the need to treat OT/IoT security as a compliance and continuity priority, not a niche IT issue. Even when disruptions do not affect residents, the operational-tech layer can be manipulated. The FBI said it is aware of the public reporting and is engaged with interagency partners to protect critical infrastructure. Local operators addressed issues after detection, but the root cause is not yet publicly identified.
