A new survey at the University of Oxford found that one in five respondents reported experiencing sexual assault in the preceding year, while 69% reported sexual harassment—both tied to the “Our Space” research project. Researchers reported that women were more than twice as likely to report sexual assault than men. The survey also found that alcohol and substance use appeared as a clear risk factor for perpetration, with a substantial share of reported assaults involving drug or alcohol use. The findings were described as slightly down from a prior survey, but the researchers emphasized that comparisons are complicated by survey timing, including that the earlier research ran during COVID-era restrictions. For higher education institutions, the results strengthen the case for prevention programs that explicitly address substance-associated risk, alongside reporting pathways and survivor-centered response systems.
