Instructure confirmed a renewed cyber incident affecting Canvas, forcing some higher-education institutions to cancel or suspend final-exam activities during peak grading periods. Universities reported Canvas outages and student-facing disruptions, including grace periods for missed work and outright cancellation of tests in some cases. Multiple outlets traced the disruptions to ShinyHunters, which has claimed access to large volumes of school data. Instructure said it temporarily took Canvas offline to contain access and investigate, citing exploitation tied to Free-For-Teacher accounts. The second wave is amplifying operational risk for campuses that depend on Canvas for grades, assignments, and course materials at semester end. Institutions are also responding to extortion-leak timelines, even as Instructure states Canvas is back online and available for use in many cases.
