Preliminary National Student Clearinghouse and research-center data show higher education enrollment rose about 2% this fall, with community colleges and short-term credentials producing the largest gains. Undergraduate enrollment increased 2.4% overall; public two-year colleges led with roughly 4% growth. Nondegree undergraduate certificates jumped 6.6%, outpacing associate and bachelor’s gains, while demand rose sharply in mechanic, repair, health and engineering technician programs. Analysts said the data point to students prioritizing workforce-ready credentials and community colleges as the primary driver of the recovery in enrollment.
