The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) granted recognition to Mexico’s Comités Interinstitucionales para la Evaluación de la Educación Superior (CIEES), marking the first time a Latin American accreditor has earned CHEA recognition. CHEA’s board accepted a Committee on Recognition recommendation after reviewing CIEES’ application at the November 2025 meeting. CIEES accredits roughly 201 institutions and evaluated more than 3,700 programs over the last decade across associate through doctoral levels. CHEA President Nasser H. Paydar and Board Chair F. Javier Cevallos emphasized the recognition as a milestone for cross‑border quality assurance and student‑centered outcomes. The decision matters for international partnerships, credit transfer, and institutions seeking validation of Latin American quality assurance practices. Universities and systems that rely on international articulation or joint degrees now have a clearer line to an externally recognized regional accreditor.
