Sonoma State University will restart NCAA Division II athletics after budget cuts eliminated sports in 2025. Beginning in the 2027–28 academic year, the public institution will field athletes in 10 Division II sports within the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The planned return includes women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, and volleyball, plus men’s basketball, cross country, golf, and soccer. The athletics feasibility work cited benefits spanning enrollment and Title IX alignment, community engagement, and recruiting, alongside a one-time $8 million state injection to help restart facilities and training infrastructure. The revival follows a reported $24 million deficit that triggered broader academic and administrative cut plans and sparked outcry and litigation from athletes. Since the elimination, Sonoma State said it has received combined legislative and CSU chancellor support to stabilize finances and selectively re-enable suspended programs.
