A new Boston Consulting Group analysis of AI use at work highlights an “AI productivity paradox” where employees report saved time from AI but receive little guidance on how to use it. BCG’s 2026 Global AI at Work report surveyed nearly 12,000 frontline employees, finding 42% reported saving eight hours per week—while 66% said they got limited or no direction. The report attributes part of the adoption lag to leadership communication failures, with executives struggling to articulate AI vision and strategy. As a result, employees reportedly fear change and do not translate saved time into more strategic work. For universities planning AI workforce development and for academic workplaces adopting AI tools, the findings underscore the need to pair technology rollout with governance, training, and clarity about how staff time and roles should evolve.
