Connecticut moved to stabilize research after federal funding cuts to the University of Connecticut and UConn Health. Gov. Ned Lamont announced $35 million in state funding to backfill some of the impact from the Trump administration’s reduction of roughly $95 million in research funding. Lamont said the state’s investment will come from a $500 million contingency fund created to support human service programs imperiled by federal cuts, and he framed the action as protecting research and development capacity. UConn leadership described the federal disruptions as unprecedented, including threats to academic and research programs. While the state contribution is less than half the amount lost, UConn officials characterized it as a “vital lifeline” for ongoing studies. Biology professor Nathan Alder called it necessary to preserve research integrity as UConn navigates policy shifts and uncertainty across NIH, NSF, and other federal agencies.
