An analysis published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that cuts to NIH grant funding this year led to cancellations affecting more than 380 clinical trials and tens of thousands of participants. The study reviewed over 11,000 NIH‑funded trials and reported 383 trials lost funding between Feb. 28 and Aug. 15; many were recruiting or active when support was pulled. Authors warned about participant safety, wasted data and ethical obligations when trials stop midstream. Separately, reporting and commentary trace broader strains across federal research funding —including controversial negotiations and “deals” universities struck to restore funding — that are reshaping campus research portfolios and graduate student pipelines.
