A privacy issue tied to Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot surfaced when users reported shared conversation links appearing in public Google search results. The exposure reportedly involved chats created through Claude’s “share” feature, which generates a snapshot of a conversation at a shareable URL. Reporters said some exposed chats contained sensitive information, including cryptocurrency wallet keys and personal details like names and addresses. Anthropic said users retain control over what gets shared and that the company does not provide chat directories or sitemaps to search engines. Anthropic indicated the issue has been fixed after researchers demonstrated a search technique that caused previously shared conversation pages to appear in results. However, many of the previously exposed links reportedly remained reachable for users who already had the URL. For higher education, the incident raises familiar concerns about AI tools used in campus workflows—particularly around downstream sharing defaults, third-party indexing, and the need for clear institutional guidance on student and staff use of AI chat products.
