Universities and K-12 platforms are facing renewed scrutiny over how AI-enabled systems and online interactions handle child data and risk. A coalition of child advocacy organizations—including Fairplay and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation—filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission alleging Roblox uses manipulative design that puts children at risk. The filing asks the FTC to investigate practices under the FTC Act and scrutinize compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Roblox said the platform is designed for positive experiences, emphasized safeguards and age verification, and noted that only a small share of daily active users pay for Robux. The complaint’s focus on deceptive monetization and chat access reflects the heightened policy attention to online child safety, including how age verification can be circumvented.
