The U.S. Department of Justice extended compliance deadlines for a Title II web accessibility rule under the Americans with Disabilities Act, giving colleges more time to meet technical requirements. Under an interim final rule, public colleges in counties or cities with populations of 50,000 or more now have until April 26, 2027, instead of April 24, 2026. Smaller jurisdictions get an April 26, 2028 deadline. The DOJ cited resource and implementation burdens raised by higher education and K–12 organizations, including concerns that compliance would require significant staff time and coordination across websites, mobile apps, social media, and digital textbooks. The rule’s technical standard remains the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 Level AA. For campus IT and accessibility teams, the extension changes risk calculations for procurement, remediation roadmaps, and vendor contracts—especially for institutions with large digital footprints spread across learning management systems and third-party tools.
