The U.S. Justice Department opened investigations into how race is considered in admissions at Stanford University, Ohio State University, and the University of California, San Diego. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon announced the requests publicly and directed the schools to produce admissions-related information by April 24. The DOJ’s information requests reportedly cover test scores, ZIP codes, relationships to alumni, and donor ties going back seven years. The requests also include any correspondence between the admissions office and pharmaceutical companies regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. The investigations broaden the administration’s admissions data demands beyond undergraduate selective colleges and signal that federal enforcement could increasingly target professional-program admissions. Schools that receive federal funds could face escalating exposure if they fail to comply with data requests.
