The U.S. Department of Justice accused Yale University of using an illegal race-based admissions program in its medical school, alleging Black and Hispanic applicants had higher admission chances than white or Asian applicants despite lower grade-point averages and test scores. The DOJ said Yale has continued a race-based approach despite the Supreme Court’s 2023 ban on affirmative action in college admissions. DOJ attorney Harmeet Dhillon told Yale’s counsel that the university is violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and sought a voluntary resolution agreement. DOJ also warned it could take the case to court if compliance cannot be reached through voluntary means. Yale said it is confident in its “rigorous admissions process” and will review the DOJ letter. The announcement follows a DOJ notice to UCLA’s medical school earlier this month, reinforcing how federal enforcement is shaping higher-education admissions compliance nationwide.
