Nine research sessions were removed from the agenda of the National Research Conference on Early Childhood after a late intervention by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Researchers reported being notified by email on June 16, less than a week before the three-day conference in Arlington, Virginia, was scheduled to begin, despite prior peer-review selection of the presentations. The removals affected nearly one-fifth of the 48 sessions, according to researchers, and included topics ranging from childcare licensing and kindergarten transitions to infant mental health and social-emotional development. Many presenters—spanning universities, nonprofits, and government agencies including Yale University, the University of Alabama, Child Trends, the Urban Institute, and the Office of Head Start—said they received no substantive explanation for why their accepted panels were withdrawn. Presenters described the action as deeply disappointing, particularly given that the conference is designed to inform policy and practice through evidence review.
