A US Department of Education Office of Inspector General report says staffing reductions in the early months of the second Trump administration appear to have affected units performing statutory and oversight responsibilities. The OIG found at least 1,579 job cuts across 3,902 employees—about 40%—between Jan. 20, 2025 and March 31, 2025. The watchdog said the reductions eliminated suboffices in 15 of the department’s 17 offices and resulted in terminations of 90 grants totaling $504 million, with teacher training and mental-health services among the most affected. It also flagged contract terminations totaling $1.3 billion. The report describes impacts on enforcement functions such as Office for Civil Rights complaint investigations and compliance reviews, as well as changes in Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services oversight and monitoring capacities.
