A national study of Yondr-style cellphone pouch bans found that restrictive policies removed phones from students during school hours but produced close to zero measurable gains in academic achievement, attention, or absenteeism in the short term. Researchers compared outcomes at roughly 4,600 schools using Yondr pouches to other schools and reported small improvements in high-school math scores but mixed or negative effects in middle schools. The study also found a temporary spike in suspensions—about 16% in the first year—before disciplinary patterns returned to typical levels. While policymakers in many states have already implemented bans or restrictions, the findings suggest districts should weigh the behavioral disruption costs against limited academic benefits as they decide whether to expand restrictions.
