A coalition of disability and education organizations sued the federal government over what they say are withheld education research and data funding appropriated by Congress. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts against the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Office of Management and Budget, alleges the funds were not properly apportioned for grants and contracts. The lawsuit claims nearly $2 billion in withheld funding covering programs through the Institute of Education Sciences, including the National Center for Education Statistics and National Center for Special Education Research, will expire and reduce access to research-based guidance affecting students—including students with disabilities. An Education Department spokesperson said the agency is committed to using appropriated funds to meet statutory obligations, while OMB did not respond in time. The case highlights how compliance and administrative process decisions can quickly alter the research pipeline for education scholars and the data systems states and districts depend on.
