Florida’s Board of Governors approved Stuart Bell as the University of Florida’s permanent president, ending nearly two years of leadership instability following the abrupt resignation of Ben Sasse. Bell, who began serving as interim president in June, is now set to start immediately. The vote followed a politically charged confirmation process in which Bell faced right-wing scrutiny regarding prior supervision of diversity-related initiatives while he led the University of Alabama. During the meeting, Bell said priorities include filling major leadership vacancies, including provost and several deanship roles. Bell’s contract includes a base salary of $2 million with performance bonuses of up to 15% for the second through fifth years if UF hits short- and long-term goals established by the board. UF’s trustees highlighted performance indicators from Alabama, including 13% enrollment growth over a decade and increases in research spending and fundraising. Administrators and board members nationwide will watch how UF’s governance and compliance posture evolves now that a politically contested appointment has closed, particularly as higher education boards face growing pressure on DEI, free expression, and institutional credibility.
