Projections from Huron Consulting Group suggest the pace of private, nonprofit college closings is picking up, with more than 440 institutions at elevated risk based on enrollment trends, debt, and related measures. The analysis flags particular vulnerability among small, rural, and religiously affiliated colleges, and estimates the student impact of closures: fewer than half of affected students continue their education, and only about half of those earn degrees. It points to demographic headwinds from declining cohorts of 18-year-olds, reduced transition rates into college, weaker international enrollment due to visa restrictions and costs, and added strain from limits on graduate and professional loan demand—further compressing institutional budgets.
