Kentucky State University projected a sharp enrollment drop tied to a new state law that forces the institution to disenroll students who owe the university money. The university estimates in-person and online enrollment—including dual enrollment high school students—at 2,873 this spring, falling to 2,300 by next spring, with SB 185 cited as a significant factor. SB 185 also places significant financial control with the state, requires employee levels to support an enrollment target of at least 1,000 in-person students, and restricts—during the financial exigency period—how many academic areas the institution can offer. KSU said the law is also intended to help the school transition toward a polytechnic model and that lawmakers provided “unprecedented” funding, while noting the 20% figure is a projection based on multiple factors.
