A Chinese-American accounting professor has sued Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business alleging tenure and promotion discrimination favoring Indian-origin faculty while discriminating against non-Indian candidates. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in the Northern District of Texas and cites potential violations of Title VII as well as retaliation. Sean Wang, the former assistant professor who filed the case, says he was denied tenure in 2024 despite publication and citation records that he characterizes as stronger than colleagues approved. The complaint alleges the department granted tenure to 100% of Indian-origin candidates while denying tenure to 100% of non-Indian candidates during a specific period, and it names department leadership in disputes over research standards and subjective “fit.” If the allegations proceed, the case could affect how business schools document tenure criteria, manage committee decision-making, and defend against claims tied to subjective evaluation standards and resource disparities.
