MIT decided to shut down the 67-year-old MIT Sloan Management Review (SMR), and members of the journal’s editorial advisory board have pushed back sharply. MIT Sloan Dean Richard Locke told colleagues the publication would cease after nearly seven decades, with the final issue slated for September 2026. Board members told outlets that they were surprised by the announcement and rejected the leadership’s framing. The closure is expected to eliminate 23 full-time staff positions and roughly 20 contractors. Locke said the move supports a broader push for streamlined external engagement, including more newsletters, podcasts, social media, and short-form digital content. But contributors and board members argued the decision reduces a major intellectual institution to branding and communications priorities.
