Part-time faculty in California filed lawsuits alleging they were not compensated for work performed outside classroom hours, including lecture preparation, travel, grading, and ongoing student communication. The Sacramento Bee reported the litigation targets the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and multiple district employers. The cases follow an $18 million settlement reached earlier this year with the Long Beach Community College District over similar allegations. Plaintiffs seek payment “owed” for uncompensated work, arguing adjuncts perform workloads comparable to full-time faculty but on short contracts with lower hourly wages and limited benefits. With more than two-thirds of the California Community Colleges workforce categorized as temporary or part-time, the suits could influence how institutions structure adjunct compensation policies, workload expectations, and oversight of non-instructional duties.
