Syracuse University is offering early retirement packages to about 175 faculty members, according to a notice to faculty from Provost Lois Agnew. The buyouts are available for faculty with at least 35 years at Syracuse or for those teaching in programs slated for closure or with low enrollment. Syracuse previously said it planned to cut nearly 100 academic programs. Agnew framed the downsizing as a way to make offerings “more focused” and aligned with student demand, with the voluntary buyouts designed to reduce morale damage compared with involuntary layoffs.
