The U.S. Department of Justice extended web accessibility compliance deadlines for public colleges and K-12 entities under an interim final rule. For institutions and school districts in jurisdictions with populations of 50,000 or more, the original April 24, 2026 deadline moved to April 26, 2027; smaller jurisdictions now have until April 26, 2028. The DOJ said organizations raised concerns that compliance is resource-intensive and that staff time and vendor work have been difficult to complete by the initial date. The rule requires covered entities to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA for websites, mobile apps, social media, and digital textbooks. Only a small share of surveyed school districts reported being near completion, and higher-ed and ed-tech groups characterized the extension as breathing room for sustainable implementation. The change will affect IT roadmaps, procurement timelines, and campus accessibility audits for the next academic cycle.
