The U.S. Department of Justice escalated its legal battle with the University of California system and UCLA over allegations of antisemitism and anti-Israeli harassment. DOJ sued UCLA under Title VI, arguing the university violated civil-rights law by being “deliberately indifferent” to harassment against Jewish and Israeli students after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The complaint seeks court orders that could change institutional policy and also demands financial remedies. DOJ asked a judge to require UCLA to repay federal grants it received while allegedly noncompliant, and to pause remaining payments on existing grants, according to the lawsuit description. UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk disputed the allegations in a statement, while DOJ’s filing centers on campus protests including a pro-Palestinian encampment cleared by police. For higher ed institutions, the case is a live example of how Title VI compliance expectations are now directly tied to federal funding and prescriptive operational requirements.
