The Senate HELP Committee advanced bipartisan legislation blocking key parts of the Trump administration’s plan to move offices within the U.S. Department of Education to other federal agencies. In a 13-9 vote, senators approved S. 5046, which would prohibit transfers covering special education oversight, postsecondary education functions, and parts of K-12 and Indian education programming. The committee action follows months of education organizations’ criticism that interagency agreements—signed without Congress fully approving a shutdown—are changing implementation of major federal education programs. Supporters of the bill said the transfers raise accountability and oversight concerns for states and families. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) introduced the measure to “maintain really core components” at the Department of Education, while Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) argued the bill keeps landmark programs “where Congress specifically put them.” The bill now heads to a full Senate vote, and the Department’s press office said it is “premature” to sabotage a “proof of concept” underway.
