A coalition of education organizations says the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences is on track to lose $289 million if funds are not spent before a September 30 deadline. The Knowledge Alliance memo reviewed Office of Management and Budget documents and estimates IES would have to return unused appropriations to the U.S. Treasury. The analysis suggests research tied to special education could be hit hardest, with an estimated loss of about 82% of funds. IES is the federal hub for education research and data collection, including maintaining IPEDS, the federal postsecondary data system. The coalition said withholding or delayed spending has already disrupted activities including research, data collections, technical assistance, and support for states, as IES faces scrutiny under the Trump administration’s efforts to “reimagine” the agency.
